Dear League Members and Supporters,
You are invited to join the League of Women Voters for a special in-person luncheon featuring our distinguished guest speaker,
Regina Gayle Phillips, Executive Director of the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center in St. Augustine, FL.
|
|
Highlighting over 450 years of history, the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center in St. Augustine honors the city's Black history, from the Spanish colonial period to the Civil Rights era. Exhibits focus on illustrating what it was like to live in the Lincolnville neighborhood in the early 20th century, as well as how the lives of West African people were forever changed during the quest for enslaved workers.

Mrs. Phillips came to the museum as a volunteer in 2015 and has helped to transform its exhibits and organizational structure. She holds a Journalism Degree from the University of Florida and was managing editor of the Daytona Times Newspaper in her youth. She has managed a successful catering business, Gayle's Gourmet. She also worked with her husband Floyd in his Allstate Neighborhood Insurance Agency in Miami, FL.
Phillips also brings a wealth of knowledge from her world travels. She has been able to transfer much of her business experience and writing skills into interpretive exhibits and grant writing for the museum. Under her leadership the museum also preserved the Excelsior High School which is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
She was also instrumental in establishing several income streams and cultural programs for the non-profit including a live jazz series and a Living Legends annual awards program. She has been successful in building collaborations with other institutions in the area to establish the Resilience Project and others, such as St. Johns County Black Heritage Trail Guide.
